@millieodegard: Sometimes the "it's what my character would do"-moments are a call for collaboration between players. And while "it's what my character would do" is often considered the catchphrase of every ttrpg problem player, you can definitely stay true to your pc without giving into their every impulse. #ttrpg #ttrpgtok #ttrpgtiktok #dndtok #gamemaster

every player is both actor and director. sometimes you gotta take that step back and ask yourself does this further the narrative and gameplay in a way we actually enjoy

i like to call this "positive metagaming". it's still metagame, but for the good of the game. i highly encourage my players to engage in it if necessary

turning to another PC telling them to hold on to them firmly so they don’t do anything insane

One of my favorite examples of this is Fool’s Gold by Dingo Doodles- it’s a retelling, not live, but the pov character is known for being easily upset and somewhat unpredictable and that’s part of the storytelling.

chickened out of playing a Lawful Evil character because of this. Felt too bad for being anything more than slightly mean.

Our paladin just did something similar when we had to leave a companion behind to save ourselves, he said “my character won’t leave him. PLEASE CONVINCE HIM TO LEAVE.”

I have this with the Deck of Many Things right now (though I also control the character holding her back - two campaigns from different settings combined so double the party), I have a monk that asks too many questions and gets into everything and found one - meanwhile my wizard inherited one with a very clear ‘don’t mess with this ever’ note from her mentor (kept very safe in secret location) which has at least delayed it being used (the monk would never tolerate it being confiscated like the Wizard would prefer).

Had this happen a few sessions ago. my character (extremely traumatized) was made to relive trauma by an npc in a fight. I used the #2 approach but only one party member tried to talk them down and she failed so my character did something they never would have done otherwise.

I'm definitely a huge fan of communication above the table. In our group we are pretty clear about what the character is doing vs what the player wants. Or sort of the inverse of that, being clear that I'm okay ooc with our evil-esque party member stealing or from my character for example.

I play at a table with autistic people who spent 20MIN looking up whether or not Wood elves get Fey Ancestry and can’t be put to sleep because it’s in the core race not the subrace……I wish I was joking

numerous times in my current campaign we've learned information/needed to do something that my paladin would try to stop. I've asked above table for them to lie to her so many times.

"if I take one more step, one of us isn't leaving alive." is a great way to let your party know that if they want this npc alive, to probably get your character out of there lol

I don’t allow real in-party conflict. But I’m all for role-playing in-party conflict. It’s always part of a good story, as long as the players enjoy it.

One time a fellow player of mine said “My character would set this house on fire to try and kill the baddies, but I don’t want to because you’re inside it.” I said don’t worry it’s fine my character will find their own way out. Sometimes meta discussions are good 🥰

I had that situation on Monday night. My character agreed to sacrifice themselves for the safety of the party. It didn't go over well honestly they wanted me to just keep fighting even though I had just gotten up from death throws and we had another character about to get back up after death throws as well.

Had this happen today. My character was about to kill a goblin. But I knew we would be better asking questions. I had the swords out ready to strike and I said to the table "Is anyone gonna tell me to stop?"

One time my charcter was furious with another PC that betrayed mine in her backstory. after screaming my lungs at her and throwing a disintegrate at she (She was level 16 so i knew she would be able to tank it) i very calmly said "guys, i think it's time to stop me 😅" an then counterspelled a heal on said pc

Karlach in Act 3 of BG3 is a perfect example of this! She wants to get Gortash, and unless you do something to stop her, you have a nearly impossible fight on your hands
