Tragic :
euthanising animals who are suffering shouldn’t be controversial but most ppl unfortunately would rather animals rot and die in a cage than be put down😭

APA has been doing shady stuff for a long time. If you’re in Austin please foster/volunteer for Austin Animal Center ❤️

And let's be frank. Kill shelters aren't just putting down animals for fun. They do EVERYTHING they can to avoid it.

Wow. I did NOT know this and I totally would have just blindly supported “no-kill” shelters and villainized “kill” ones. Thank you so much for sharing this information! I am so glad to have learned this!!!

Open admission vs closed admission. "No kills," aren't no kill. They're just "no kill here, make it someone else's problem." The dogs still get euthanized.

If you want a nice pet, statistically you'll have a better chance adopting from a shelter that euthanizes their dangerous ones rather than one who keeps these dogs caged for life, hoping for a unicorn home.

People don’t realize that euthanasia is SO OFTEN the kindest option for so many animals

That's a shame. My sweet boy Darwin came from APA years ago.

I rescued my dog from a “no kill shelter”. They still euthanized, it was just done off site. I was flabbergasted when I found that out.

As an Austin resident, I’ll just say that Austin Pets Alive has been problematic for a number of other reasons for a loooooong time, in addition to being a no-kill shelter.

Let’s do away with “no kill” and “kill” altogether. There are open intake shelters and closed intake rescues. Period. And instead of villainizing open intake shelters with high euthanasia rates, that energy should be directed at getting local governments to properly fund municipal shelters.

So true. No kills need to walk a mile in municipal centers shoes

it's like public school test scores versus private schools. private schools get to turn lower performing kids away to help their scores

This is so important! I adopted my cat from a "kill shelter" but because of fosters, adopters, donations, and other rescues stepping up, they hadn't had to euthanize an animal for capacity in years! Support your local animal control!

I switched from fostering for a no kill rescue to my local public (kill) shelter seven years ago and haven’t looked back. It’s real easy to soapbox when you can pick and choose what you take as an organization and vilify the shelter system that reflects the community it serves.

A lot of “no kill” adopt easily adoptable dogs like puppies and purebreds. They take pressure off the kill shelter while keeping their hands clean. But they’d never be able to function as is without the kill shelters

Also, Municipal shelters (often Animal Control) are supposed to be short-term. They're not setup for long-term care. People give them a hard time, but they are the triage/safety net for community pets in immediate danger.

I am SICK of the perpetuation of the narrative that ‘kill shelters’ have worse intentions than ‘no kill shelters’ and that somehow they love animals less, or worse, WANT to euthanise animals.

Here in Finland we take care of animals we take or they are rehomed by owner (mainly). We don’t have any killing shelters. Hopefully people in US will learn to take responsibility of the animals they have. ❤️

I worked at a high kill shelter for 2.5 years. 1200-1700 pets a week coming in. If we were lucky 20 adoptions a week. Do the math. I trauma bonded with so many people there we are still friends to this day. 18 years later.
