Negative sir, go outside the rub rail then hook on the inside of rub rail. Safer and easier to hook up.

Unless the rub rail on your trailer is given a weight rating by the manufacturer technically it’s illegal to hook onto the rub rail

what I do is from the hook from falling is I grab something heavy like a stick or block to hold the strap while I go to the other side and ratchet down

Little advice the frist way you said how to do it . I like that one what I do is but a magnetic on it then tighten it up it works . A old timer show me . 🤷♂️.
