He chose to let go because he felt safe. His last moments were warm and full of love. It’s always incredibly hard but that’s better than being alone in a shelter or wherever he’d been prior to being brought in. He trusted you enough to let go.

I tried to save a mourning dove who was attacked by a dog in the park. She was in so much distress I just tried to make her comfortable in a warm dark environment and not stress her out with my presence. When I checked on her she’d passed, and I wish I’d been holding her.
