My parents born 1930 and 1931. I’m 67. They have both passed. I was brought up with that being a common word, but at age 5 I started questioning racism. I could not grasp it. I clearly remember being at my pediatrician’s office. I was an outspoken little kid and I didn’t feel good so it made me more outspoken/irritable. As we were checking out a black woman and her young son were let in a back door that I could see clearly from the check out desk. I demanded (loudly) an explanation why they came in that door and we always came in the front. Also they were seated on a wooden bench and we always sat on upholstered chairs in the large waiting area. Their bench was in a short hallway. When nobody answered me I just got louder demanding an answer. I made a big issue out of it. Saying that’s not right, that little boy is sick too. I was 5 and my entire viewpoint changed that day. 1962 or so.

people with dementia don't 'just remember to hate'. something changes. my mum. gentle, kind, caring a lady. called all sorts when she had dementia. said she wanted to push me down the stairs. kill me. said some horrid stuff. I am her only daughter, I knew it wasn't my mum saying these things. i couldn't handle working with dementia patients, even though I have an intimate knowledge of it. it's so very sad, she would me absolutely mortified if she knew some of the things she said. 😔

No this happened to one of my old coworkers, we were helping this woman wake up and she just shouted "Get off me monkey". He laughed it off but I was like she can't do that you need to tell her it's not nice. (I did tell her it was rude btw I didn't just expect him to do it). Worst thing is she's like the sweetest for the whole day after being woken up and changes into a whole new person 😭

No but in all seriousness it shows how recent humans became accepting and thats so awful to think about lol. Like wdym theres people still ALIVE from when racism was at its peak. Thats too recent.

I was working in a dementia ward, and we got a new nurse who was black and I actually had to stop and talk the old people from jumping him because they were huddled up and talking in hushed tones about it in one of the corners. Legit making plans and getting each other worked up about it 💀
