It's actually based on a phenomenon hikers and mountain climbers feel in extreme situations. its called 3rd man syndrome. climbers say that it encourages them to keep climbing. its really neat that the devs added this for solo runs.

He doesn't just appear in the Mesa either. Me and my roommate saw him at the camp in the Tropical behind a rock, and on our next run the rock wasn't there. He's real, not just a hallucination
