I realized that I, as a white person, was unconsciously using the phrase “going off the reservation” as a good thing in my job in software development, and then in some of that DEI corporate training that they probably have banned by now, I realized that that phrase might be “culturally insensitive”. I actually thought it was a compliment for “someone not constrained by the rules unjustly Imposed upon them”. But having a sister who lived in Oklahoma, who knew actual Native Americans, I asked her to ask what they thought of that phrase. And she said most did think it was definitely “slurrish”. So I stopped using that phrase, and I am not deprived in any way for that. And I grew and learned from that, and I am grateful for that opportunity. And I am genuinely sorry if I offended someone by using that phrase.

In Australia, people give ethnic names nicknames not as a way of endearment but specifically to make it easier to say/remember which I think is actually so disrespectful bc they won’t even make the effort to try and use their proper name.

when i worked at Starbucks, i would purposefully mispronounce and misspell basic white ppl names it was so fun. john, sarah, tom, etc etc i got really creative with it
