CHAPTER SIX
CHAPTER SIX "When Duty Calls" After that night, Ginny tried. She really did. She started waking up earlier just to have breakfast with Jayna. She blocked out certain evenings on her calendar. She stopped accepting unnecessary shifts. Whenever she had even an hour between surgeries, she would call Jayna just to hear her voice. Sometimes, she would show up at Jayna's office with coffee and a tired smile. “I'm stealing you for lunch.” Jayna would laugh. “You have twenty minutes.” “Then I'll make those twenty minutes count.” And somehow, for a while, it worked. They were finding their rhythm again. But there were days when Ginny's promises collided with something neither of them could control. One evening, they were having dinner together. Jayna had spent the entire afternoon preparing everything. Ginny was telling her about a funny thing that happened at the hospital when her phone suddenly rang. She glanced at the screen. Her smile disappeared. “What is it?” Jayna asked. Ginny stood. “Emergency.” Jayna's heart sank. “Again?” Ginny looked at her. “I’m sorry.” Jayna immediately regretted the word. She looked down. “No. It's okay.” Ginny walked around the table and held her hand. “I'll come back as soon as I can.” Jayna forced a smile. “I know.” Ginny kissed her forehead. “I promise.” Then she left. The door closed. Jayna sat alone at the table. The food was still warm. Two plates were still on the table. But suddenly, the room felt unbearably quiet. She stared at the empty chair across from her. She wasn't angry. That was what hurt the most. She knew Ginny was saving someone's life. How could she be angry at that? How could she ask the woman she loved to abandon a patient just so she could stay? So Jayna waited. Again. Midnight came. Then one in the morning. At 2:36 a.m., her phone finally rang. “Jayna?” Ginny sounded exhausted. “I'm sorry.” Jayna swallowed. “Are you okay?” “I'm fine.” “Did you eat?” “No.” Jayna closed her eyes. “Of course you didn't.” There was a tired laugh from the other end. “I'll come home.” Jayna looked toward the clock. “Just stay there.” “What?” “Rest there.” “I want to see you.” Jayna's eyes filled with tears. “I want to see you too.” She took a shaky breath. “But you're exhausted.” Silence. Then Ginny whispered, “I miss you.” Jayna pressed her lips together to stop herself from crying. “I miss you too.” After the call ended, Jayna sat in the darkness. She understood Ginny. She understood the patients. She understood the responsibility. But understanding didn't stop her heart from hurting. The next morning, Ginny finally came home. Jayna found her asleep on the couch, still wearing her hospital clothes. She quietly covered her with a blanket. Then she sat beside her. She gently brushed the hair away from Ginny's face. “You're trying,” she whispered. A tear slipped down her cheek. “I know you're trying.” She leaned down and kissed Ginny's forehead. “But I'm scared that trying won't always be enough.” Ginny stirred awake. “Jayna?” “I'm here.” Ginny reached for her hand. “I'm sorry.” Jayna held it tightly. “Don't apologize for saving someone.” Ginny looked at her. “Then what should I apologize for?” Jayna smiled through her tears. “For making me miss you this much.” Ginny's eyes filled with tears. She pulled Jayna into her arms. “I wish I could be everywhere you need me to be.” Jayna hugged her tightly. “You don't have to be everywhere.” She closed her eyes. “Just don't let me become the place you forget to come back to.” Ginny held her tighter. “I won't.” And Jayna wanted desperately to believe her. Because sometimes the saddest part of loving someone isn't that they don't try. It's watching them try with everything they have... and still realizing that sometimes, love cannot make one person be in two places at once. NOTE: “The hardest kind of love is loving someone whose heart is yours, but whose time belongs to so many others.” #ginjay #alkeys #ginnynatnicha #jaynaangelina #thaigl
