Replying to @vikrop60 SHIMONI FISH PORT HANDED OVER TO KPA AFTER THREE YEARS OF CONSTRUCTION 🗞️ Kenya’s vision for a stronger Blue Economy is taking shape with the completion of the KSh 2.6 billion Shimoni Fish Port in Kwale County. The port, which is the first of its kind in the country, was officially handed over to the Kenya Ports Authority earlier this week. The state-of-the-art facility located in Shimoni, near Wasini Island, was constructed by Southern Engineering Company Limited and includes a modern jetty, cold storage units, fish processing plants, and an ice-making machine. The port has the capacity to handle up to 200 tonnes of fish per day and is expected to create over 1,000 direct and indirect jobs. Officials say the port will support deep-sea fishing, reduce post-harvest losses, and boost fish exports. Speaking during the handover on July 16, KPA Managing Director Capt. William Ruto hailed the project as a breakthrough in Kenya’s Blue Economy, emphasizing the role of local contractors in delivering the facility. But even as the port opens, concerns have emerged over its environmental impact. Locals and conservation groups have warned of damage to coral reefs and disruption of traditional fishing livelihoods. Additionally, a dispute is ongoing between KPA and a private firm, Nexus Marina, which had proposed a separate floating port in the same area. The government is now preparing to launch an international tender to select a private operator to run the Shimoni Port. A formal commissioning by President William Ruto is expected once operations begin. #shimonifishport #kpa #blueeconony #SECO #kwalecounty
