What happened to the bodies of the 1,500 victims of the Titanic? On the night of April 14–15, 1912, the Titanic sank in the icy North Atlantic with over 2,200 people on board. Around 700 survived. The stories of those who lived are well documented. But what about the ones who didn’t? News of the disaster spread quickly, but the true scale only became clear when ships passing the wreck site reported seas filled with bodies. Even before the Carpathia reached New York with survivors, the White Star Line had chartered special recovery ships like the Mackay-Bennett, Minia, Montmagny, and Algerine, with Halifax, Nova Scotia as their base. The first ship, Mackay-Bennett, left Halifax on April 17 loaded with coffins, canvas body bags, embalming supplies, ice, and even a team of undertakers. When they reached the site on April 20, they began the grim task of recovering the dead, recording each body carefully with numbers, descriptions, and personal effects. Over two months, recovery ships found 334 bodies. Limited embalming fluid and space meant choices had to be made. First-class passengers were prioritized for embalming and coffins. Second-class passengers were often wrapped in canvas. Many third-class passengers and most crew members were sewn into canvas bags and buried at sea after brief ceremonies. In the end, only 209 bodies were brought back to land. Fifty-nine were claimed by families and buried at home. The rest were laid to rest in three cemeteries in Halifax. As for those never recovered? Experts believe their remains were scattered across the seafloor, eventually claimed by the ocean itself.
