Classical Chinese painting, poetry and pottery hold a surprising amount of therapy for anyone willing to sit with it. The paintings dwarf people against enormous mountains and rivers on purpose, a reminder that being genuinely small in a vast, indifferent universe is oddly consoling rather than frightening. The poetry doesn't flinch from grief, ageing, and friends who die, treating sadness as a basic feature of being alive rather than a personal misfortune to hide. The same poets wrote with startling emotional honesty about crying over a son leaving home, proof that openness about feeling was never actually a modern invention. Artists who lost favour at court and were exiled to remote provinces didn't only mourn it, they painted small, unshowy lives full of birds, bamboo and moonlit evenings, finding real contentment in very little. And after centuries of civil war and upheaval, the culture's finest pottery went the opposite direction from noisy and decorated, choosing instead pure, empty glazes in green, silver and yellow, built entirely around a longing for calm. None of this was ever really about admiring old art for its own sake. It was a working set of tools for getting through a difficult life, built centuries before anyone called it therapy. Follow us for more useful ideas, every day.
