@theworld.org: Spain’s Manuel Jaén is the last Roman scale maker around. He makes balances that were everywhere in Ancient Rome, when wealth was measured by weight. This design served emperors from Alexandria to Constantinople, and is still used today — Jaén makes 1,000 balances every year, and the scales can hold up to 1,000 pounds. “What we’re really weighing is the force of gravity,” he explained. “Whenever the forces on both sides of the axis are in balance, and the axis rests perpendicular to the fulcrum, you’ve ascertained the exact weight.” Jaén exports his scales all over the world. Some people buy them to bake pastries because they don’t trust modern scales. Someone once tried to buy one for illegal cockfights. Jaén has even seen his scales in drug busts on the news. When The World’s Gerry Hadden asked why he makes the scales, he said, “It’s the pleasure in achieving that moment of perfection. Looking for balance, and peace. Isn’t that really what we’re all after?” 📸 Videos by Gerry Hadden for The World @GBH #RomanScales #RomanEmpire #AncientRome #AncientArtifacts
