The Tragedy of the “Dangrek Mountain Push-Back” Thailand often says that it “helped Cambodians during the khmer Rouge .” However, behind this claim lies a very sad reality. In fact, Thailand did not accept Cambodian refugees out of its own goodwill. It was the United Nations (UNHCR) that provided the funds and created refugee camps. From the spring to the autumn of 1979, about 140,000 Cambodians fled to Thailand. But the Thai government did not accept them all. Many people were told to “go back” and were forcibly sent back to Cambodia. This became the great tragedy known as the “Dangrek Mountain Push-Back.” The refugees, without food or water, were forced to cross the steep mountains. At night it was cold, and they suffered from snakes, disease, hunger, and countless landmines. Many lost their lives. Especially on June 12, 1979, the Thai army put many refugees on buses and brought them to the cliffs of the Dangrek Mountains near the Preah Vihear Temple. When they tried to climb down the cliffs, many were shot, fell to their deaths, or were killed by landmines. According to UN reports, about 3,000 people died and 7,000 went missing. In April of the same year, 826 refugees were also transported by bus near Aranyaprathet in Buriram Province and forced to get off at a cliff. There too, many became victims of shootings and landmines. One UN official testified that he saw “2,000 dead bodies” at the site. This event shows the deep suffering of Cambodian refugees. It is a tragic history that must never be forgotten.
