@komo4seattle: The Chelan County Sheriff's Office is raising concerns over worsening conditions in the Enchantments, a popular destination in the Cascades. With only one U.S. Forest Service employee overseeing thousands of acres, issues such as overflowing toilets, mounting trash, and safety risks are escalating. "It’s not being respected, I’ve gone up there and you see the wrappers in the side of the trail, you see the water bottles in the lake, you’re seeing toilet paper that’s not even being attempted to be covered up, and you see human waste," said Sheriff Mike Morrison of the Chelan County Sheriff's Office. "Would anyone like to see that in their backyard? Previously, a team of eleven rangers patrolled the area, but now only one remains. During the summer, approximately 700 people visit the Enchantments daily, a number that local officials say is unmanageable for a single ranger. Volunteers have stepped in to assist, but the sheriff's office reports they are being stretched thin. "We’re being asked to do more and more, and it’s not our job to do the feds' job, and we know regionally they want to do the work, but they’re not getting the support they need from Washington D.C for the funding," said Sheriff Morrison. -------------------------------------------------- 🔗 in bio for the full story. _______________ #komo #komonews #komo4 #komo4news #seattle #seattlenews #washingtonnews #enchantments #Hiking #backpacking #trail #maintenance #nationalparkservice #nps #northcascades #enchantments #hikers #Outdoors #nature #4u #fyp #foryou #foryoupage #foryourpage

People need to practice leave no trace. It shouldn't require Rangers to keep it clean. People need to be held responsible.

Our taxes in washington are so high why the hell can't we afford more resources instead of waiting for funding from the federal government? I have no sympathy hearing any local governing bodies whining about lack of funding from DC.

One agent for the entire permit sector and adjacent wilderness? That’s absurd. Eleven isn’t even enough…

Restrict it. It's been helpful in Colorado. Also if you see something, say something some people really just don't understand how to be in nature. I've been in Washington all but two days and there's people out here hiking with just their hopes and dreams.

They went to permits for overnight, might need to be like central Oregon and go to permitting even for day hiking.

It’s time to publicly shame people who are disrespecting these places. If you can’t be a good steward, shoot, even a mediocre steward then you deserve to be known.
