It’s costs absolutely nothing to pay a compliment to someone. To that person, a compliment could mean the absolute world. Additionally, why would I want those around me to not succeed? I want my friends to be crazy successful in life if that’s what they want for themselves

I think in the US, people may privately not be happy for someone, but socially it is expected that you be supportive and encouraging of others. And if it is deserved, people generally cheer you on.

generally in the US people are encouraged to succeed. most root for your success. I suspect that's where the phrase "the land of opportunity" comes from, it's part of the US culture

Most of the US sarcasm it focused on being self deprecating. We will beat ourselves up but try not to do that to others. And honestly even if you “fake” being nice to others after a while it starts to be second nature to actually be nice. And it isn’t all altruistic… it feels good to make someone else feel good.

From my Scottish dad I always got the impression that nothing positive we did mattered. It was taken for granted we were supposed to exceed. But the slightest error or bad move was because I was a complete useless failure. It made my Mom’s unconditional love seem a sham to keep the peace and compensate. When I met someone who was raised to allow for mistakes as growth, I was stunned. As an adult it’s taken me my entire life to learn how to talk to myself as kindly as I would another.
