They probably ran over a nuclear density test gauge, it sounds worse than it is, the density of asphalt is measured with a little gauge that uses a little piece of cesium 137 to measure the density of the asphalt, certain states require certain densities for the asphalt, and if the company can make the density requirements, they get a bonus. The radiation from the cesium 137 is practically nothing, you’ll get more radiation if you microwave a burrito. if you want to know what the thing looks like, look up a nuclear density test gauge, they let highschoolers operate them on job sites.

I test compaction of materials with 2 different radioactive materials. if you look up a "troxler nuclear gauge" it will pull it up. they have all sorts of precautions but are relatively safe. years ago and guy went down the highway with one on his tailgate and lost it at highway speeds. they tried to find the material for 2 weeks and never tracked it down.
