One morning, when the Aria buffet was still open, I went in to eat. The cashier informed me that I had to pay up to a 30% gratuity before I was even seated. I said, “I’m the one walking to fill my own plate—why on earth would I tip before I even know how the food tastes?” I haven’t been back since and won’t.

Las Vegas now caters almost exclusively to the wealthy and high-rolling “whales,” acting as if the average person doesn’t exist. The Vegas of years past—where everyone felt welcomed and catered to—is long gone. Today, they nickel-and-dime guests to death for even the smallest amenities. I won’t be going back. I stayed in a high-roller suite, but at the Aria, I didn’t receive any real service until they knew my room number. My advice to Las Vegas: never judge an individual by their appearance, dress.
