@okinawa_dvds: Driving in Okinawa with a SOFA License 🇯🇵 For my fellow DoD contractors stationed in Okinawa — here’s your quick guide from your Local Explorer on getting on the road. 1️⃣ What You Need First • If you already have a valid U.S. state driver’s license, you can get a SOFA (Status of Forces Agreement) Driver’s License without a Japanese test. • Bring your U.S. license, military/government ID, and orders or DoD contractor paperwork. 2️⃣ Where to Go • Head to the Pass & ID Office on your base. • They’ll handle the paperwork and issue your SOFA license—valid for driving anywhere in Japan as long as you maintain SOFA status. 3️⃣ Driving in Okinawa – Quick Tips • Drive on the left side of the road; steering wheel is on the right. • Speed limits are low: usually 40–50 km/h in town. • Watch for scooters, pedestrians, and slow tractors—especially in rural areas. • No right turn on red in Japan 🚦. • Typhoon season?
