![What is the shape of eternity? In Târgu Jiu, it stands tall, unyielding, thirty meters of bronze-clad iron piercing the sky, Constantin Brâncuși’s Endless Column. Fifteen rhomboids rising one upon another, as if time itself were climbing a ladder it could never finish. Erected in 1938, this is not mere sculpture but incantation, a hymn of steel and light, forged for the soldiers who never returned from the Great War. Stand before it and the silence deepens, as if the earth itself were exhaling, handing you a secret too immense for words. Brâncuși did not sculpt for museums or salons, he sculpted for the soul. He left Parisian acclaim and returned to his homeland to build not trinkets but monuments, an ensemble where memory became geometry: the Table of Silence, the Gate of the Kiss, and this Column, this relentless axis that dares to touch the infinite. Think of it: a shepherd’s son from Oltenia, whose hands once carved wood with rustic patience, now bending steel into poetry. And alongside him, the voice of Maria Tănase, his friend, his mirror, singing ballads that could make stone weep. She sang the air; he sculpted the silence. Together, they carried Romania’s spirit into eternity. Look upward and the Column is no longer bronze; it is hunger, yearning, prayer.
