Sometimes I hate being an only child because no matter how much I try to stay strong, the loneliness always finds its way back to me. I watch people with siblings laugh together, fight over small things, and still have someone beside them at the end of the day. Meanwhile, I grew up learning how to stay quiet, entertain myself, and carry emotions alone because there was never anyone at home who truly understood me the way a sibling could.
People think being an only child is easy because you get more attention or freedom, but they never see the emptiness behind it. They don’t see how painful it feels to have no one your age to lean on during hard times, no one to share childhood memories with, and no one who will always be there after your parents are gone. Sometimes the house feels so quiet that it makes the loneliness louder, and no amount of distractions can fill that space.
What hurts the most is realizing that while others grow up with built-in best friends, I grew up learning how to survive alone. I became independent not because I wanted to, but because I had no other choice. And honestly, there are nights when I wonder what it feels like to have someone who would understand me without needing an explanation — someone who would stay, simply because we grew up side by side.
