In August 2025, Indonesia erupted in some of its fiercest class struggles in decades. From Pati, Central Java, where nearly 100,000 workers, peasants, and students resisted a 250% property tax hike, to Jakarta, where thousands confronted Parliament over the grotesque privileges of political elites, the anger of the people boiled onto the streets. Across Sulawesi, Riau, Surabaya, Makassar, and Bogor, ordinary Indonesians rose against austerity, corruption, and the state’s open defense of the ruling class. These protests were not accidents but the direct result of President Prabowo’s Rp 306 trillion austerity package—over 8% of the national budget—a measure to satisfy markets at the expense of workers and the poor. With public funds gutted, local governments shifted the burden onto the masses through property tax hikes of up to 1,000%, while the political elite insulated themselves with inflated salaries, perks, and foreign patronage. The outcome is a sharpening contradiction: official inflation at just 1.6%, yet declining real wages, 12.3% drops in household spending, mass layoffs, and suffocating inequality. This crisis revives old wounds. In the late 1990s, the IMF’s neoliberal diktats—austerity, subsidy removals, and rapid liberalization—pushed millions into poverty and provoked the uprising that toppled Suharto. Today, Indonesians face a familiar reality: capitalism’s crisis is paid for by the working majority, while elites reap the benefits. The recent weeks have shown a nation in motion. From tax revolts to student uprisings, Indonesia’s restless generation is once again refusing to stay silent.
