@freemanworks_: @Amanda Seales says all cops are bad. I agree on the systemic harm, but as a veteran and community organizer, I think the strategy needs more nuance. We have to critique the system without closing the door on the people who might one day turn against it. That’s how you build power, inside and out. #AmandaSeales #AllCopsAreBad #Veterans #FrantzFanon #Abolition

Oof yeah but a lot of us understand the military as an arm of empire. The people asking for grace and nuance want to absolve themselves for their compromised morals and integrity should understand that you chose survival by means of oppressing others. Not saying soldiers turned activists shouldn't be included, but there's a bigger requirement for proving themselves trustworthy.

We get put into these systems than feel the need to judge and generalize each other even though we are all being oppressed- I wouldn’t join the military personally but many of my friends and relatives have because the opportunities presented to them were more than likely opportunities they would never have had otherwise- so if I know they aren’t out there taking advantage of power who am I to judge

I really appreciate this perspective. I co-lead the campaign to end qualified immunity in New York and we face these dilemmas when navigating coalition building with former or current law enforcement

appreciate your thoughts, brother. lots of our activist leaders in history - Robert Williams is another; in Puerto Rican history, Pedro Albizu Campos - had a military background. Sadly, police is a good job. I have friends I grew up with who say started in college or working in hotels then turned to a police gig. it pays well compared to many other gigs you need more education and it offers a pension, so it is attractive.

I just watched born on the Fourth of July by Oliver stone and captures the vet to activist pipeline really well. People who’ve experienced the other side are the most credible voices imo.

They definitely go into lower income communities to recruit. They present you with the benefits.

Great talking points. Your grandfather became a cop to provide for the family. Didn't last long when he saw the intentional injustice.

This is tough 💕 for more context, a lot of mother’s side are in the army because options were limited in the South. My grandfather fought in Nam, my cousins are currently enlisted or Vets. It’s a conflicted relationship we need to be ingenious about.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I think everyone who wants to dismantle the system should read The Spook Who Sat by the Door

but military and police have different cultures. a lot of ex-military people become activists, but ex-cops...become private security

Understanding the nature of those who enter into armed forces or LEOs, especially now, is good and all and I respect what you’re saying about leaving the door open - but I think we need to emphasize that part you said about being discarded. That DC Leo’s are arresting and criminalizing homelessness - 15% of unhoused are vets - at the same time the institutions like Va are being gutted. The rule of empire is to weaponize its citizens against one another first!

I loved listening to this and learning your perspective. I wonder if this paradigm extends beyond cops and soldiers. I’m a healthcare provider in a broken profit-based system that hurts and hamstrings people AND helps people too. I often feel powerless to make change. I wonder if that’s what it feels like (for some) cops and soldiers. we struggle with conversations about agitating from the inside - because it’s hard to trust an “ally” who is visibly part of the “enemy”. I think about Schindler - who overall was a pretty bad guy, a war profiteer - and all the lives he saved. Carrying the nuance is impossibly heavy.

I used to work at a mall and the recruiters would become predatory towards groups of teens on the weekends. Your prefrontal cortex isn’t developed yet but you’re signing the next 5 years of your life to the empire. I’m not saying it takes accountability away from the individual but the system is always built against you.

Insiders usually get swallowed by the system. People have to be committed to internal change or they will become a cog.

Cops aren't even human. Billions go into research and development to create those damn accadamies which are specifically designed to extract the humanity out of them. So they can feel absolutely nothing when they kill a kid The just violent automotons for the state. Just the way the state wants it
