@stereogum: Chubby Checker has been publicly advocating for his induction into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame for 25 years. “I don’t want to get in there when I’m 85 years old,” the rock ‘n’ roll pioneer told AP in 2014. “I’ll tell them to drop dead, so you better do it quick while I’m still smiling.” Over the years he’s also demanded a statue of himself in the museum’s courtyard. “Everybody’s made a whole lotta money off of Chubby,” he told ‘Variety’ in April, reiterating his wish for a statue. “Give the man some credit!” This fall Checker will finally be inducted at age 84, but now he says he won’t be attending the ceremony. In a recent onstage interview shared by FutureRockLegends, the “Twist” hitmaker says he has a gig that night. It’s not clear if Checker would’ve been allowed to perform on the broadcast if he did show up. Last year members of Foreigner were displeased with the Rock Hall’s decision to let pop stars like Demi Lovato and Kelly Clarkson take the spotlight during most of the band’s showcase. #ChubbyChecker #RockHall
