You should have the 2 side up, they need to be able to wrap their feet around the board for stability and comfort.

We did the 2/4 but they roost in the rafters on the 2/4 that are skinny side up instead of the flat ones.

I saw your video about this months and months ago and glad I did. We were able to install 2x4s in our coop and I feel like it’s also more comfortable to sleep on than keeping their balance on a rod.
