A sonic boom is a shockwave that follows the aircraft the whole time it is flying faster than sound. When it passes over you, you hear and feel it, often as a double boom from the nose and tail. The sound can carry for miles, rattling windows and shaking buildings. That is why supersonic flight over land is normally banned. The exception is that fighter jets can go supersonic if they are intercepting a possible threat, during certain training missions, or to quickly help an airliner or aircraft that’s lost communication’s .
