In 1801 Toussaint Louverture abolished slavery in Santo Domingo after bringing the eastern Spanish colony under his authority. Napoleon restored slavery after a French Expedition captured Toussaint Louverture. In 1822 Jean-Pierre Boyer’s Haitian government ended slavery there decisively when it incorporated the eastern territory into Haiti.
