@courtneylynnhunter: “A developed country is not a place where the poor have cars. It’s where the rich use public transport.” Gustavo Petro, mayor of Bogotá #publictransport #city #urbanism
Agreed. But that implies that the public transit is safe and clean. Otherwise a rich person is not going to use it. They don't ever have to, so it would be a choice for them.

Back when I lived in Korea in the 70s, only the wealthy could buy and own cars. Car ownership was a sign of wealth. I find it ironic and sad that the poor are living out of their cars and vans here in America.

Curitiba, Brazil did a fantastic job starting in the 70s.. if I were mayor I’d bring the council on a learning trip there, maybe Copenhagen too

Bloomberg commuted by subway on occasion when he was mayor. It was anything special, he did it often

I’m currently in Thessaloniki and thinking about this a lot. It’s the most American feeling place I’ve been to in Europe so far. I decided it’s because of the emphasis on car transportation (google search and Redditers seem to agree). It makes such a difference! We need to decenter cars in more US cities
