It’s because school is focused on us passing the NCLEX. I did nothing but CNA work for most of my clinical rotations. It wasn’t until my last semester’s where I was able to do more “nurse” work. Also the floor nurses act like they can’t be bothered with us and our instructors tell us we will learn on the job. Not to mention they shorten our orientation time and throw us new grads on the floor to fend for ourselves. I was supposed to get 10 days of orientation. I got 3 🤦🏼♀️

I've seen more nurses go into rooms without stethoscopes than I can count and I just cannot understand what they are charting on. it blows my mind.

Why do I need to listen to their breath sounds? An army of interns, residents, fellows and attendings listen to their breath sounds. Not to mention the RTs.

Nurses shouldn't be responsible for students at clinical, orientation is too short and being short staffed chronically creates nurses who are checking off required documentation instead of focusing on the basics.

Who are these nurses who actually use stethoscopes???? All my nursing school clinical rotations, different hospitals different floors/units, not even once did I see a nurse/preceptor have or use a stethescope. 😩😩

I know learning physical assessments is hard but after a while you can do a good assessment in 2-10 min depending on your speciality.

Here’s the thing. You have to care why the assessments aren’t getting done and you have to care about how understaffed. I’m a newer grad, and I assess my parents. The very least- I assess neuro, lung sounds, bowel sounds, other or not they have edema- however can I do in depth assessments like I would like to? NO. I can’t. And yes, it’s because I have 7 patients and am managing multiple drips on a med surg floor. It’s also hard as a new nurse because when you’re chronically understaffed you do not have time to learn the assessments thoroughly, learn the medications like you should, etc. you don’t build those skills when chronically understaffed so yes UNDERSTAFFING matters.

Main reason why nursing school needs to be SCIENCE based not NURSING based. We need to be taking the same science courses as PAs and pre med students. You cannot perform a skill if you don’t even know the WHY behind it.

As a new grad it’s really hard to read some of these comments. There is a LOT of generalization here. And in these comments apparently a lot of nurses who believe in eating their young. Hard to learn when nurses like this make it hard to ask questions. Thankful to all the experienced RN’s who will answer any and all of my questions!!!!

The facilities are only hiring new nurses. No appropriate training or support there for them. I think it’s important for nurses to ask how many new nurses are on the unit before accepting a position.

My nursing school emphasized assessments. But then in clinicals, the atmosphere among nurses was so bleak and they would tell us a lot of the foundational skills were a waste of time or impossible to actually do with your work load. I think this is more of a culture problem created by hospitals not supporting their staff appropriately

It’s 100% because of nursing schools these days. I cannot even tell you how often we hear “you’ll learn this skill on the job, don’t worry about it”. They only care about knowledge and passing the NCLEX. All of our time spent on skills has been pulled way back and the main priority of our time is on exams 🥺

I am a nurse of 30 + years and I was inpatient for 7 days and only one nurse in the week I was inpatient did any assessment on me. I was shocked.

newbies don’t know how to do manual BP’s, blood draws, colostomy bag change, wound care, dressing change, omg the list goes on. Worse - they don’t want to learn. I quit bailing them out.

I’ve been hospitalized several times over the last several years. Not one nurse or Dr laid hand on me so it’s not just nurses. And I’m a nurse! And they knew it!
