I say its about child exploitation in families, the saddest story was Alex's life dealing with bullies, held for ransom by Gladys, and forced into silence. I think that this movies underlying message is that there are deeper stories to situations that meets the eye. The first thought everyone had was to blame the teacher but it wasn't even her fault, and everyone picked on Alex and he acted like nothing was wrong, but that's a dangerous reality of children where they may be in situations they are forced to keep secret.

These people who are criticizing this film would never survive a David Lynch film.

Okay but if you consciously include a theme and don’t strongly commit to it, in any medium, the work has failed.

what I love about Barbarian and Weapons is that even before I let them sit in my head, I walked out of the theater knowing that I greatly enjoyed them without even being able to explain why

Exactly! I hate seeing people say “Weapons is about nothing” just because Cregger isn’t spoon-feeding an explanation to them in interviews. Half of the meaning of art is how the audience interacts with and interprets it.

Mate the majority of people don't go to the cinema to analyse what they're watching. They just want to switch off their brain for a couple of hours and be entertained. If you want to analyse a movie, go do a college course...

It tracks that he wrote it that way. My issue is that the film is just not interesting at all. Sure it could be about many things, but it’s not about anything enough to care. And it relies on tired tropes to shortcut the story into having any meaning.

I understand all of these things. I understand why and how he wrote/structured it the way he did, and what the symbols are. I still didn’t like it, and that’s fine

I’m sorry but “it’s up for interpretation” is a writing copout.

I cannot understand how people didn’t enjoy this movie, one of my favourites to come out this year for a variety of reasons

I hate the term media literacy. It's just a term thrown around used to discredit or discourage any sort of meaningful conversation about art and instead just be used as a justification for "erm, actually your opinion is wrong you have no media literacy 🤓"

He specifically said it wasn’t meant to be interpreted in the school shooting way. That the point wasn’t supposed to political.

Thank you, omg I feel like great auteurs also deliberately don’t pinpoint one message or theme in a movie. His experience was dealing with the grief of one of his best friends. That doesn’t straight out eliminate the idea of school shootings and the impact it has.

I don’t enjoy having movies explained to me, David Lynch is my favorite of all time. I sincerely just did not like this movie, and I don’t think that has anything to do with analyzing film incorrectly. You really can just not enjoy a movie

Nah, it was poorly written. I’m a huge movie buff and correctly guess the big Oscar wins every year. This movie is for the popcorn crowd and pseudo-intellectuals. It is very poorly-written.

But he literally has said the movie is about grief. He wrote it because his best friend passed away and each character represents a different part of his grief and how he could've/did deal with it.
