Early wake-ups between 4–6am are frustrating, but they don’t mean your baby is a bad sleeper or that you’ve created a “bad habit.” Most of the time, early mornings come down to: sleep pressure. Sleep pressure is what helps your baby stay asleep. It builds while they’re awake during the day and supports longer stretches of sleep overnight. When naps, wake windows, or bedtime timing are slightly off, that pressure can drop too early, and the early morning hours are where this shows up first. Between 4–6am, sleep is lighter and your baby’s body is already closer to being ready for the day. So even a small dip in sleep pressure can turn into a full wake-up. When sleep pressure is solid, many babies are able to sleep right through this window. The good news? Early mornings are usually very fixable with a few simple adjustments: ✅ Dial in age-appropriate wake windows (Check out my FREE sleep needs by age chart in bio) Wake windows play a huge role in building sleep pressure. Windows that are too short, too long, or inconsistent are one of the most common reasons for early wakes. ✅ Stick to a consistent morning wake-up time Pick a realistic wake-up time and keep it consistent. Large day-to-day swings can confuse your baby’s internal clock and reinforce early mornings. this may mean waking them at a certain time each morning. ✅ Treat anything before 6am like a night wake Keep the room dark, interactions minimal, and avoid starting the day too early. Lights, feeding, or play at 5am teaches your baby that morning has officially started. Early wake-ups are information!! (not a sign you’ve done anything wrong), and with the right tweaks, they often improve quickly 💕 ✨Follow me, Dr. Laura for more daily sleep and development tips! #babysleephelp #earlywakeups #infantsleep #newmomlife #sleepconsultant
