I think it's also the case that Champions in the 80s was such a niche publication that they flew under the radar in a way that, say, the Captain Marvel comics of the 1940s didn't.

They easily could have argued that they are similar in the same way that the marvel characters were *also* largely based in established archetypes/tropes. The Knight, The Warrior Woman, The Antihero, The Outcasts, The Fallen Hero, The Criminal, The Assassin, The Diety, The World Ender, The Other World Ender, etc. 😉

Geeks Gambit :
When CoH came out I had been in beta where th a number of comic industry pros who were playing characters from books they were working on or had worked on. Then CoH said no you can’t have those similar looking characters sone even got letters from the publisher saying no it’s cool but CoH was like nope nada not gonna do it.

Thankfully there is only 1 foxbat 😂 to be fair the major characters from dc and marvel are the accepted archetypes. Though there are obvious pastiche’s like rocket hawk is just modern day rocketeer. Pulsar is basically mar-vell,etc. I love 4e aka the big blue book. It’s still available POD

Snagging actual comic book artists for Champions went a long way towards really selling it as a game. flipping through those old manuals, recognizing who did what piece, really makes them feel like you're reading a licensed rpg from another timeline that just happened to fall into ours

I would just sit in my bedroom making champions characters and villains all night. My favorite being “The Booger”
