Facial reconstruction of a 5,750-year-old woman from Georgia The woman, discovered in Darkveti near the Kotias Klde site, belonged to the Kura-Araxes culture. This culture was predominantly an East Caucasian phenomenon that succeeded the earlier Sioni culture and is marked by an increase in CHG ancestry. Its westernmost presence extends into Upper Imereti, where this individual was found. The Imeretian subset of the Kura-Araxes culture stood out from other Kura-Araxes groups. The Imeretian Kura-Araxans constructed kurgans with richly furnished graves even before the Martkopi-Bedeni kurgan tradition emerged. This subset was also known for advanced metallurgy and bronze hoards containing weapons and tools. Genetically, the Imeretian Kura-Araxans likely represented a fusion of local proto-Kartvelian tribes with the wider Kura-Araxes population. Evidence from a Middle Bronze Age individual from Sagvarjile supports this, showing Kura-Araxes ancestry combined with the proto-Kartvelian high-CHG profile, which is most pronounced today among the Svans. The custom of interring the dead in elite, richly adorned graves extended into Samtskhe-Javakheti, where several presumably related individuals were found at Atsquri, also dated to the Middle Bronze Age. These opulent burials contained 54 handmade clay vessels, 221 bronze artifacts (including spearheads, daggers, bracelets, and torcs), several gold items, and 286 beads of various shapes. The individuals buried there displayed a blend of high-CHG ancestry and Kura-Araxes heritage, all belonging to Kartvelian G2a2b2a1a1a1b2 Y-DNA branches. #ancientdna #phenotype #anthropology #skull #georgia #chg
