Im from Rio and I tell anyone who asks me to NOT stay in Copa. Ipa or Leblon is superior, by far IMO. Tourists: do not, and I mean do not, contemplate staying in Lapa as it’s very run down (visiting sure), or Barra (so boring)

Don’t stay in Santa Teresa, Lapa, or Copacabana. Santa Teresa is safe during the day, but in the evening, it’s a hotspot for mugging—I was almost mugged there by two guys with a gun. It’s also more difficult to get Ubers to Santa Teresa because it’s uphill. Lapa is a run-down place with a lot of homeless people; it’s cool to visit if you’re going for a party, but don’t stay there, lol. Copacabana is much worse than Leblon or Ipanema. So, it’s only leblon/ipanema, botafogo and flamego are fine too.

I stayed in Lapa and nothing bad really happened to me. But the amount of people I met who got robbed on gunpoint there was endless 😂 lots of those incidents even happened in Broad daylight, so would not recommend staying there

we stayed at copa in a really nice hotel, front of the beach. nothing bad happened. Ipanema better beach but you can stay at copa for sure.

Anyone coming to Rio and staying in Barra is crazy!! That’s nothing good there, stay in the walkable areas
