Trouble had her fair share of rusty fixings! So rusty that lots of these wouldn’t turn and undo…. This taught me that a socket set, spanner set, screwdriver set or any other tool is no use to man or beast if I can’t over come the rust and turn the thing I am trying to undo. The three essential tools I use to give my “traditional” tools a chance against this rust and undo these troublesome fixings are: WD-40, a hammer and a heat gun. This is how I use them… The first tool I use is WD-40. This is a penetrating lubricant which works its way into the small gaps between the threads helping to lubricate the fixing which reduces any friction. I believe it also contains clever chemicals that help to break down any rust which has formed. Once the WD-40 has had some time to do its job I try to undo it. If it’s still not moving I then give the head of the bolt (and the sides of the nut if they’re accessible) a tap with a hammer. This sudden shock force though the bolt can help to break any “rust bond” that has formed. If after a few taps with the hammer it still refuses to budge I’ll get the hot air gun on it. Heating the metal causes it to expand. This movement can help to break rust bonds. Once suitably hot I’ll try again to undo it. Usually at this point the “sticktion” is over come and it starts to move. I’ll then use more WD-40 to help lubricate the moving surfaces as I undo it. If it doesn’t undo I persevere with squirting and soaking it in WD-40, shocking it with a hammer and heating it with the hot air gun. Eventually, it will usually give up the ghost. If it doesn’t, one of two things typically happens. If it’s a “light weight” small fixing, it sheers and breaks. If it’s a bit stronger, I’ll get the angle grinder out. One way or another I’ll get the thing undone! What are your favourite essential tools? #porscherestoration #restoration #restorationtips #classiccar #classiccars
