The phrase “get your body back” doesn’t really make sense to me, because my body didn’t go anywhere—she’s been with me every step of the way, and we’ve been through quite a journey together these past 9 (or 10-11, actually, counting the loss before this pregnancy) months. While each of my postpartum experiences have been unique, with this one, this is the first one I’m not feeling the pressure to get into optimal shape as quickly as possible. Here’s what I’m doing instead: 1. Prioritizing hormone health. I know now that if my hormones are out of whack, everything—and I do mean EVERYTHING—else suffers. The fourth trimester is an important time of healing and recalibration, especially when breastfeeding around the clock. Nutrition, sleep, hydration, vitamins and minerals, herbs, sunlight, long cuddles (yes please, oxytocin!)…all top priority for this healing body. 2. Pelvic floor rehabilitation Daily slow, intentional movements that help GENTLY close the gap in my abdominals and engage my TVA muscles. While part of me is already eager to get back to my pole flow, now is the time to focus on regaining functionality, not test my strength. Foundations first; the rest can come later. 3. Focusing on nutrition, not calories. The more nutrient-dense, warm, soothing foods, the better…which often means more calorie-dense, too. Establishing a good milk supply requires a lot; it’s not time to skimp on portions or worry about macros & calories. 4. Speaking lovingly my body “Girl, WHAT! We really did that, grew and birthed a whole human! How amazing are you?!” Just in awe every day of how our bodies grow, adapt, transform, heal, and keep other tiny humans alive. There’s no sense of “ugh, wish my body could ______ again already.” Deep reverence and gratitude for this vessel. Which ones resonate most with you today, or which do you feel most drawn to implementing more of? Love you, Wild Ones! #postpartum #momsover30 #momsover40 #postpartumjourney
