New Zealand’s unemployment rate has crept up to 5.2 percent — the highest level since 2020 — as businesses freeze hiring and economic uncertainty continues to bite. New data from Stats NZ shows that around 2,000 jobs were lost in the June quarter, bringing the total job losses over the past year to 16,000. While full-time employment saw a minor uptick, part-time jobs declined, and the underutilisation rate — which includes the unemployed and underemployed — rose to 12.8 percent, the worst since late 2020. Labour market spokesperson Jason Attewell said the unemployment rate has jumped 1.9 percentage points since mid-2022, noting a drop in youth employment as more young people return to education. Wage growth also slowed, down to 2.4 percent from 2.9 percent previously, reinforcing expectations that the Reserve Bank will cut the official cash rate again soon. Finance Minister Nicola Willis admitted the jobless rate isn’t good enough but said it was still better than Treasury’s pre-election forecasts. “There are 8000 fewer unemployed people than predicted,” she said, promising the government is focused on getting Kiwis back to work. Willis pointed to $6 billion in infrastructure spending before Christmas and a fast-tracked project regime as key drivers to create “real jobs behind real spades.” She added that while Trump’s new tariffs add uncertainty, the government remains confident unemployment will fall in the months ahead. #nz
