I made a town that was founded when a group of wood elf refugees fleeing clan conflicts came across a small human settlement that was just starting to grow. The humans welcomed them with open arms, and now this forest town is a thriving blend of the two cultures with a huge population of half-elves. The main landmark is a fountain in the square with an elf and a human working together to symbolize the town's history, and there's a magic shop with a quirky shopkeep NPC. My players fell in love with the town, and it made the buy-in of "The army is now violently occupying the town, it's time to join the rebellion" very easy 😏

Never forget to adapt these to your settings, in a medieval time villages wouldnt be as attracting as capital cities

depends on how much realism vs high fantasy you're doing, but not every town needs an iconic landmark. sometimes it really just is a convenient place where farms got set up that turned into a small trade town
