@house.of.hoot: The U.S. FWS is going to DELETE 450,000 barred owls! There are around 15,000 Spotted Owls, 3 million Barred Owls, and over 6 million Great Horned Owls on the U.S. West Coast alone. That’s right Great Horned Owls outnumber Barred and Spotted Owls combined. And here’s what they don’t want you to know: Great Horned Owls eat both Barred Owls and Spotted Owls. They are one of the biggest reasons young Barred Owls don’t survive. In fact, only 1 in 3 Barred Owl chicks makes it to adulthood because of starvation, disease, and yes, predation by Great Horned Owls. So if Barred Owls are being blamed for Spotted Owl decline… why is no one talking about the predators eating them both? Also Barred and Spotted Owls sometimes mate, creating fertile hybrid chicks referred to as “Sparred Owls”. The species aren’t enemies they’re relatives trying to survive in the same shrinking forests. They are making you believe barred owls are “invasive” when it’s deforestation & corporate greed that causes their decline!
