Mate, I agree with most of the things you say, and I am a Muslim. I want to share my perspective because I think it’s important to understand different experiences. I am a Muslim, and my wife wears a hijab. I came to this country when I was 8 years old. I finished my studies here, worked hard, paid my taxes, and bought a house. I have always respected the laws of this country and its people, and I want to thank all Australians for giving me and my family such an opportunity. I have lots of friends from different cultures, and I’ve played grade cricket with them—they’re still my best mates to this day, and we always stand up for each other. When it’s Christmas, we go over and get invited for lunch, and when we have Eid, they come to join us. It’s about building bridges and community. We have never pushed or shoved our religion on anyone. My wife wearing the scarf doesn’t mean she is forcing her religion on anyone. A minority of the new refugees who come here do make things harder for some of us, especially my wife wearing the hijab. We used to go out in public, eat, and drink freely, but now we feel scared. All I want to say is that not all Muslims, Hindus, or Buddhists are like that.
