All this does is inflate prices even further. Banks seem quite willing to lend past retirement age

@M: It is terrible advice to suggest to repay a mortgage early. Repay your other debts first, credit cards especially. If you’re otherwise debt free, put the money into a stocks & shares ISA

Get the longest mortgage you can and then invest as much as you can to pay it off early

People are stretching the term because they want to still be able to live and travel and enjoy life alongside home ownership

we are one of those signings ... we could afford the costs of a bigger mortgage but the bank didn't think so..so it was a 35 yr term or no mortgage at all. even with a 50k deposit, we we saved for ourselves and on decent wages 😑. we have paid 18k in interest in one yr... you let me know whether we couldn't afford it or whether they are being greedy.

my friend took our a 35 year mortgage when he first qualified as a nurse, as he earned more he overpaid and shortened it as soon as he could. after 5 years,he's at 19 years and his property has increased in value too.

It’s also taking longer to save for a deposit… I’m 41 and just getting a mortgage which I was able to get 25 years and still able to overpay. I’m not surprised people are having to take out longer terms now 🥺

“Nobody saw it coming…” erm what??? Maybe the comfortably off didn’t see it coming. The working classes have seen it coming for years.

Mortgage affordability calculations are so outdated. Often the bank won't lend you on a shorter term, but it's incredibly easy to overpay every month. I'm on a 35 year mortgage and after 5 years I only have 20 years left.

Get the 35. Go variable. Overpay when you can but don’t be tied to a crippling monthly outgoing

Extend the mortgage as long as possible. Kids move out, sell and downsize, pay off mortgage in full and have a lump of money in the bank. Overpay where you can.

Took a 38 year 100% ltv mortgage out in 2007. Enabled us to get on the latter. Paid off a chunk and reduced the term and balance since then. Best decision ever.

I think we did see it coming. If house prices continue to outgrow wages, as they have for a long time, it’s fairly apparent that mortgage terms would increase.

My first mortgage was at age of 35 for 35 years my latest remortgage reduces term to 15 years so will be paid off by 55 with a few more overpayments. So if required do the 35 years to get the mortgage then reduce term when more cash avail
