Helmut Walter Schmidt :
We demand honesty and an end to one-sided propaganda.
In current debates, we keep hearing the same talking points – such as the constant focus on “Hamas” – while the crimes of an occupying power are downplayed or ignored. The suffering of civilians is being worsened through deliberate blockades, starvation, and military attacks. Such actions are, under international law, war crimes.
Yet the affected people resist displacement and hold on to their right to remain in their homeland. The history of 1948 is repeating itself – with devastating consequences for entire generations.
This escalation would not be possible to this extent if certain states – including Germany and the United States – did not provide military, political, and economic support. By doing so, they indirectly empower the perpetrators and undermine any prospect of a just peace.
War has no winners.
Humanity has endured two world wars, yet it seems we have forgotten the lessons they should have taught us. Instead of choosing dialogue and understanding, we once again witness violence, nationalism, racism, hatred, and division.
We must recognize: if we continue to tolerate or support violence, we all share responsibility for the destruction of our shared future and our planet.
