For ten rounds, he was sharp, composed, and in control. But then, in the 10th round, something terrifying happened. After knocking his opponent into the ropes, Buthelezi suddenly turned away from him and began throwing punches into thin air, as though he was fighting an invisible opponent. The referee immediately stopped the fight, realising something was very wrong. Buthelezi was rushed to hospital, where doctors confirmed he had suffered a severe brain injury. They placed him in an induced coma, but just two days later, he tragically passed away at only 24 years old. Reports suggested he may have suffered from a pre-existing injury that had gone undetected, and the horrifying moment in the ring was his body’s final response before collapsing completely. His death shocked the boxing world, especially because he had appeared so strong and healthy just moments earlier. Simiso Buthelezi’s story is one of the most chilling reminders of the dangers of combat sports. A young, talented fighter who had shown incredible promise, gone in an instant, in front of a live audience. For those who dont know the punch had caused a brain hemmorage to occur mid fight causing him to lose control over his entire body which caused him to “punch thin air” he died shortly after this after visiting the hospital. RIP 🕊️
