@josh_neille: Last week, late one night, a father and son brought me a tawny frogmouth they’d found on the side of the road. When they picked him up, he was barely conscious and looking pretty rough. They brought him over in a box, and I let him sit quietly for a bit. Within about 20 minutes of them leaving, I took him out to assess him and he suddenly sprung to life, flew straight across the kitchen and into the wall 😅 Not ideal, but honestly a good sign after how flat he looked when he first arrived. He had all the signs of head trauma, probably from clipping a car mirror or window, and was showing concussion like symptoms. I kept him overnight, fed him up on chicken hearts, and over the next couple of days made sure there were no internal injuries. Wings and feet had great strength, no blood, and grip was perfect. Cool fact: tawny frogmouths get most of their water from the food they eat, insects, small mammals, and even the odd frog, so hydration is built into their diet. After two days he was looking 100% so we took him back to where he was found and set him free. I’ll post the release video with the kids soon, it was a great experience and just confirmed that tawnies are my absolute favourite Australian bird.
