“Keep it secret. Keep it safe.” Proceeds to leave for 17 years to learn about the ring. Gandalf recruits Aragorn to track down Gollum so he can question him about the ring. Aragorn finds Gollum in the dead marshes near Mordor, after Gollum had already been captured by Sauron, and then takes him to Mirkwood where Thranduil detains him for safekeeping until Gandalf gets there. That’s when Gandalf learned that it was definitely the one ring. This is also when he learns that Gollum told Sauron “shire, Baggins” and prompted Gandalf to SCURRY back to the shire to warn Frodo 😅
