Call it soft start!! I do this in elementary and it helps get kids ready to learn. We don’t immediately dive into our most intensive work the second we arrive as professionals, generally we sit down and get our stuff together and don’t rush into it. Kids deserve the same opportunity for a calm start. 🩷

okay as someone who had 4- 90 minutes blocks in high school, so many of my teachers did this. I never had homework because we had time to get it done, I didn't feel rushed, we also had a 45 minute period after lunch called "seminar" that was "study hall" for everyone at the same time, getting help from other teachers was so easy due to this.

I absolutely love that. We used to have 60s/65 minute blocks but now classes are 48 minutes 😩

Been doing this for five years- call it Take Ten. Ten minutes of silence. 10 minutes for you to focus on you doing what you need to do and in no way interacting with those around you

I think if the slide includes a science fact at the bottom you can count it as teaching time

I would not give them the free time- that’s passing time. I would have them read, online quiz, science puzzle, etc

I did this with freshmen and found it really helpful. We only had 45 minute periods so I gave them 5 minutes at the top of class and 5 at the end for reflection and self management

The block schedule is maddening to me. It’s not great for older kids at all!

On the Capturing Kids Hearts social puece, we're supposed to start with 5-10 of what they call Good Things. With shorter classes, it doesn't make sense every single day (especially if kids are doing it in every class), but I do enjoy the collective feelings that can come with it

I do that at my middle school. 10 minutes to get your stuff together, finish your snack, finish your conversation. When the timer is done, so are you and then we get to work.

Love it, focus on self guided time management. Build in some extra credit certain days for specific added tasks or for finishing 2 min early to show how easy it can be to adjust your readiness timeline when needed.

We're a conscious discipline school so we do Smart Start and it's like 5-10 minutes of readying ourselves and connecting as a class. Definitely a good way to start

I crave slow start mornings as an adult. A soft start for students is brilliant

Omg the snacks are OUT OF CONTROL! And it isn’t just eating the snacks it’s the kids across the room coming over with cupped hands to get snacks from friends and then dropping the on the floor. I’m dead.

Call it connection time. Connect with those kids and watch them thrive. :)

I did this!!! I started every class with “so did anyone do anything fun in the last 24 hours?” and it gave them a chance to actively listen to others AND a chance to share their lives. If there was something crazy/funny that happened I would ask them their thoughts on it too! It transformed my community!! Some student said I was the only teacher to ask about their lives ALL DAY.

Absolutely! This works with lower grades too. Timer in the slide with a list of directions to get done. It’ll save your sanity!!

I do a “Morning Meeting” during the first 15 minutes of the day. Late kids don’t miss instruction, we listen to KidNuz, we check the weather, etc. In the afternoon we call the soft start “Rest & Digest”. Good for the kids and good for me when I forget something. ☺️

I did this in 4th in the morning. The first 30 minutes of the day was a slow start. Iready/STMath/reading. I wound up having to go over material less because even the late kids were in the class when I started teaching.

My HS physics teacher (we had 90 min blocks) would read us a story from “chicken soup for the soul” at the beginning of each class. It was delightful
