@cleoabram: It’s like wind power… but for water. This giant ball is harnessing wave power by turning the motion of the ocean into useable electricity. This theoretically means a LOT of power, but it’s hard to do efficiently and at scale. That’s where this prototype device comes in. Here's how it works... The goal is to one day have a bunch of these out in the ocean harnessing its endless motion. For more optimistic science and tech stories, subscribe! #animation #deepsea #underwater #Science #Tech
There’s like 37 versions of wave generated electricity

The issues with any ocean based renevable energy is corrosion and wildlife. Energy production requirs moving parts. Metal parts corrode very easily in salty ocean water. Mussels, barnacles, algea and other life forms find shelter in the crevices of the machine and render it unusable very quickly. Building on land or at least win turbines on the ocean is more effective.

with the roughl 620,000 kilometers off tidal affected coastline that is a lot of energy that is very close. a solution far out in the ocean looks like a maintenance nightmare.

And how will we get the electricity to the shore?

I'd just like to iterate to those who say "that's not supposed to be possible", she said "unlimited", not "perpetual."

Great concept. How does it prevent barnacles from fouling the system without hazardous paint or time consuming maintenance?

Why are there so many negative comments? If we can find renewable energy sources, it’s good for our Earth and all the humankind. Stop hating.

I've always said it's the motion of the ocean that mattered most.

That giant thing for only kw of power is not sustainable. Just a turbine is fine

People think these will be within visible range. There are parts of the ocean surface that have yet to be explored. These can be used as fences to stop poachers and shipping containers from damaging coral reefs and at risk eco systems

This is so cool!!! Are there any environmental concerns thatve been identified? I feel like the scaffolding could be reef habitat but I can't help but wonder about animals getting pulled in. Lol just thought about sharks biting internet cables and am now wondering if that'll be a challenge to work around too

Ocean water corodes everything. The question is not just will it work, but will it be economically viable over time? Definitely a good idea to peruse. May be too expensive.
