@_historyunveiled: The Great Western Schism was a major crisis in the Catholic Church between 1378 and 1417, during which there were two, and later three rival popes, each with his own followers, curia, and political allies. ⚔️ The conflict began after the death of Pope Gregory XI in 1378, the last pope to reside in Avignon. 🕊️ After the Roman populace demanded the election of a Roman pope, the cardinals elected Urban VI. 👑 However, many cardinals soon rejected him because of his harsh and confrontational character, and they elected Antipope Clement VII, who established himself in Avignon. 🏰 This created a split between the Roman papacy and the Avignon papacy. ✝️ The division was not only religious but also political — different European states and kingdoms supported different popes, which deepened the conflict and weakened the authority of the Church. 🌍 Later, in 1409, the Council of Pisa attempted to resolve the crisis by electing a third pope, Alexander V, but this only made the situation worse, as there were now three popes at the same time. ⚖️ The schism was finally ended at the Council of Constance (1414–1418), when all three claimants were either deposed or forced to abdicate. 🙏 In 1417, Pope Martin V was elected, restoring unity to the Catholic Church. 🕍 The Great Western Schism lasted for almost 40 years and left deep consequences: it undermined the authority of the papacy, strengthened the idea of conciliarism (the belief that a general council of the Church holds greater authority than the pope), and prepared the ground for later reform movements in Europe. 📜 #HistoryTime #medievalhistory #church #greatwesternschism #education
