@nadiaannaliseo: Honestly took me by surprise because there was no warning or sign she was going to do it, she just did it 🫣 I’m assuming it some sort of sensory feedback she was looking for and it’s not the first time she’s done it but usually I can kind of figure out what lead to it like being too excited etc but this was just so random? #autismawareness #asd #biting #autism
A child I work with does this when excited. We put a couple of chewies round his neck and encourage him to use them or offer some crunchy fruit

Yes definitely sensory, this is probably a very random suggestion. Try a wet flannel, it’s the release of tension when they bite down that they are looking for. My little boy bites to release the sensory tension and this was recommended to us and has been one of the only things to work!🩷

My girl bites out of excitement sometimes, it’s just a way of releasing emotions. I’ve tried tried everything to redirect the biting to but nothing worked unfortunately

My girl bites me occasionally and when you tell her to stop, or it’s not kind to bite etc, she finds it hilarious and will continue to try to bite you. She’ll bite down so hard that you can’t remove your skin from her teeth but she’ll be laughing and smiling. No idea why she does it but it hurts so much!! She won’t bite the chewies!

as a qualified sen teacher, it can be a sensory thing or when they are happy or sad or angry or it can be there way of giving you feedback on how they feel, with some children there isnt any way to change this it depends on the child. i hope this helps. i wouldnt worrie to much hunny, your doing an amazing job keep going x

When I was a kid, I would bite my dads fingers when he was reading to me (I’m autistic) I don’t really remember why I did it. I didn’t do it to be mean.

Crunchy food, thick milkshake through a thin straw, maybe switch to a silicone guard style Toothbrush just to get the chewing sensory stimulation into your routine twice a day. Sending love 💜

I used to look after a boy with autism who used to bite his arm when he was excited and I used to tell him stop and then offer him a teething ring. If she likes a particular food item with a crunch offer some to her. Say teeth for eating not biting. It can be a bit trial and error until you find what works in the situation.

Yes!! My daughter does it all the time. It’s when she’s engrossed in something particularly. She has no idea she’s done it either, she’s even started biting her clothes too. The only thing I found like kind of helped was teething toys, and that’s only because my son has them!

it's likely an oral sensory thing, we got the little one chewie things that were on a necklace and her biting has definitely decreased. maybe buy some to try and demonstrate what they are for? maybe that will help her pick up on their use because your not able to explain to her the need?
