@voiceofthegambia: Gambia News Update Kartong Residents Protest “Unfair” Land Demarcation Residents of Kartong staged protests yesterday against what they called an unfair land demarcation, following a recent official exercise that allocated a piece of land in Gunjur to the Jammeh Kunda family. The protesters, including youth and elders, carried banners and chanted slogans such as “no land grabbing” and “we don’t want civil war.” According to journalist and Kartong native Mustapha Manneh, the dispute arose when the government demarcated a disputed area between Berending village and the Jammeh Kunda family without consulting Kartong. The demarcation allegedly encroached two kilometres into Kartong land, near the Snake Farm. Manneh emphasized that the issue is specifically with the Jammeh Kunda family, not Gunjur as a whole, and called for transparent consultations. Protesters are demanding: A border demarcation between Kartong and Gunjur Access to the taskforce report investigating the issue Bakary Kujabi, a protester, questioned the impartiality of the taskforce, as it is led by a Gunjur native, a party to the dispute. Residents urged the government to address their concerns and ensure a fair solution for all parties involved. Source: The Standard Newspaper, Gambia – August 18, 2025
