Everything changed... We've been having lots of tantrums and big feelings lately. And instead of being proactive about them, l've been reactive - overstimulated and annoyed. I read this quote from a therapist and decided to try giving each of my kids 8 hugs each throughout the day. It's pretty embarrassing and sad that I had to be extra intentional with this but I'm so glad I did. The day I started this with the kids - the cortisol levels of everyone were low. Wayyyy less tantrums, excitement around the hugs and even a little competition to see who could get more than 8 hugs day. Research shows that hugs can reduce stress, lower blood pressure, boost the immune system, and improve overall well-being. They can also release oxytocin, my favorite hormone ❤️ There was closeness. There was safety. Less fights. I slowed down. My nervous system felt regulated... Which regulated theirs. It was amazing. I didn't realize how much I needed this. I started getting into a routine that it became so important that I kept it for my mental health. This helped me realize that while the routine is necessary, the relationship is essential for the routine to succeed. Research suggests that while the number of hugs is important, the length of the hug matters more. 20 seconds or longer.
